Do music conductors really do anything?

conducters are responsible for keeping the orchestra in time the yasl ocue as to when members and parts of the orchestra should ocme in as well as phrasing for example with the opening of carmina burana it needs to come in with a loud clanger so the conducter willl almost furiously throw his arm down before making the orchetra quiter for the rest of the opening with much smaller movements again telling the orchestra when to get louder with bigger arm and body movements
