Resident Evil The Darkside Chronicles?

Ok so I just got this game for Christmas and I like it so far. It's for the Wii. Here's my problem I'm in two player mode playing with my good friend but we can't seem to figure out how to kill the alligator we only get to the part were Claire Redfield says "how it's close and run" it's after they burn it and it plays dead which you have to admit was pretty good but we've played this same spot for almost 20times straight and keep dying so can someone please help us thank you so much :)
